To reformat a drive on Windows: Plug in the drive and open Windows Explorer. If you want to format your Mac's system drive, you can't do that when the Mac is running normally because the drive is in use by the operating system. Under Volume Scheme, choose 1 Partition, then click Options. Open Disk Utility, select the external hard drive and go to Partition. For maximum compatibility, back up everything from the external hard drive onto your Mac. Select the GPT format it is supported by all the external hard disk drives. If Windows says that it doesn’t recognize the drive (and you’ve already backed up any data on it), click Format Disk, and then skip the next step.
